Apple Crisp. This is my favorite Fall dessert from childhood. My Mom made it often for us and we loved it served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. She made it often for us and every time I see a picture of it or serve it, I think of my loving Mom who made such good things for us. This to me is comfort food at its best. I love these apples, too. I got to try them last year and they were so good.

Danish Pastry Apple Bars. It is from either the Betty Crocker or BH&G cookbook, about 60 years ago, although Midwest Living has been touting them as a ‘new’ recipe . My Mom always made them, and if I take them to family events, they always get a comment that Ramona always made those. They taste so wonderful!

Reply

Cara September 29, 2013 at 9:56 am

Fall’s one of our family’s my favorite seasons. Fireplace a-roaring with a hot toddy, apple crisp, veggie shepherd’s pie, apple turnovers, ebelskiver, homemade jams and jelly’s on homemade bread/muffins right out of the oven and lots of cuddling and board games on those chilly nights.

Favorite fall foods = anything pumpkin or including all the spices associated with apples and pumpkin.
But more than anything, my favorite fall food is my grandmother’s pumpkin bread.

Sadly, I live in Texas so it doesn’t feel like fall until November, then that lasts for like 2 weeks and our short fake winter starts. But I start eating fall foods in October even if it’s still 90 degrees out. :)

The vegan chili, of course! Coupled with the cheddar jalapeno cornbread….oh my god. I’ll also have to start making some cider!

Fall is time for roasting fresh pumpkin and using it in EVERYTHING! My mom’s pumpkin pie recipe, first and foremost, and then some pumpkin & sage ravioli, some pumpkin oatmeal, pumpkin bread…

I want sweet potatoes, butternut squash and pumpkin in all sorts of sweet and savory forms. And Thanksgiving dinner. I love fall food so much that I’m willing to give up all the lovely summer produce.

Nabemono! Japanese one-pot dishes with lots of fresh veggies, seafood, chicken, or beef cooked in a big ceramic pot on a little table- top cooker surrounded by friends! Everyone cooks their own. It’s very communal and cozy on a crisp night. Throw in some hot sake and it is sublime.

i am most excited for apple butter! some of my favorite fall weekends are spent apple picking and apple butter is a great way to use up a LOT of apples (since it’s so condensed) and then to get to taste that delicious fall flavor through the following winter and spring!
